"Koukla" Summer Camp

Published Mar 25, 2010

The “Koukla” Summer Camp is not a professional grounds camp, is more like a dream come true that I had since my youth. I offer a part of my family’s land in the area of Koukla in Lithakia, and with the help of Zakynthos Bible Baptist Church we have made it a reality.

It started in 2005 with 4 children, and it has grown up to 30 children. At the camp children and adults participate in various activities, and lessons of life. We go turtle spotting, bake bread, make ceramics, play various games, sing songs, and lots of swimming. Another very important event is the life lessons that we teach during the camp. Of course these lessons are of Biblical character. They are not indoctrination lessons, but they are of a more life experience character. All are welcome to attend. In the past we had some parents stay to watch. This takes place around the fire in the evening.

The idea was also to provide an opportunity to children who cannot attend summer camp, mostly because of financial reasons, a place to enjoy summer days, be care free, and learn things that will equip them for their future in their families and society. Any child from age 7 to 99 is welcome to attend. We have children from different nationalities attend.

There is no cost. The parents do not pay for their children to attend. Food is provided by the camp even though many parents help by bringing cereals, juices or even provide a meal for the children. We have a couple of businesses provide some meals as well.

We raise funds through various events during the year. We had donations from churches and individuals, table top sales, raffles and counter top tin cans.

The camp lasts 5 days. At the time that is all we can afford. The cost is about 3,000 euros for the week. If we can raise more then the camp will run longer.

It takes place usually the second week of July. Miraculously, we get enough volunteers every year so far. We had helpers come from different countries Britain, Italy, and USA.

Our safety record has been great. For the last 5 years we had a couple children with minor headaches from the heat, and one bee sting. We pray all year round for this event and it seems that God has protected us well.

Please feel free to contact the pastor about attending the camp. It is a life changing experience.
